Update on Bugsy

Bugsy had surgery on December 2nd and is doing great! She has a device that is worn on her leg that has pins in it to keep everything straight. You can barely see it in one of the pictures. Those are
adjusted regularly during her weekly checkups.

Through it all, she has been her normal happy and wonderful self. She still has a long way to go though. And when this leg does heal, we will begin looking into surgery on her other leg.

Thanks to everyone that has supported her and ACR!

Bugsy is 10 month old pit bull or pitbull mix whose owners abandoned her at the Comer Vet Clinic once they learned that the surgery needed to repair her legs was extremely expensive. The clinic called her family repeatedly over several months, but all their calls were ignored. By this time, all the clinic staff had fallen in love with Bugsy and asked for our help in getting this girl fixed up and rehomed with a permanent, loving family. After meeting Bugsy, we were smitten too. Even though Bugsy is in constant pain from her front legs and has lived in a clinic kennel since January, she is unfailingly sweet and good natured. She's addicted to laps and if she can't be there, she'll happily sit at your feet. She's a very generous kisser and and hops around like a little bunny when she's excited. All that personality wrapped up in an adorable 26 pound package is just irresistable. Several clients at the clinic offered to adopt her, but when they found out about the expensive surgery they had to change their minds. We know that if we can take care of her surgery, Bugsy will have no problem finding a family that will deserve her.

At first the Comer clinic thought Bugsy might be a dwarf because of her tiny stature and Basset-like bent front legs. But after further examination veterinarians at the UGA vet hospital think that a viral infection when she was very young caused her problems. She now shows no sign of infection and she is laying down new bone, so with surgery she will be able to live a normal, healthy life.

Bugsy's surgery will be extensive and expensive. The bones in both legs are bent and the growth plates in the wrists and elbows are not formed properly, as you can see in the pictures below. Each leg will cost between $2500 and $3000 dollars to repair, and will be done separately.

We will be holding several fundraisers for Bugsy over the next few months at places like Kingpins, Z-dog Bakery, American Spirits, Jot 'Em Down and Flanagan's - but we also need individual donations to go toward her surgery. Even a tiny amount will be a big help. She is a healthy dog other than her front legs, and she has a long life ahead of her. Please consider helping Bugsy with a donation.
