learning crate training
Introducing Pollyanna! This spry gal is only about a year old and happens to be deaf, but that doesn’t stop her from being adorably cute and trainable! Pollyanna is a Dalmation/American Bulldog mix and weighs about 45lbs. Perks of being a deaf dog – not afraid of fireworks, thunderstorms, or any other loud noises!
Thank goodness she has all of the essentials down – housebroken, crate trained, good with dogs, good with children, good with cats… have you put your application in for her yet? I mean… what else do you need to know about her?! Sleeping through the night in her crate is a done deal, and no accidents to go along with it! Following a treat to get in her crate is the trick. Plus, she eats her meals in her crate now so she has become more and more fond of it. In fact, when she is let inside from romping around in the yard, she’ll sprint into her crate, even if it’s not mealtime!
Ok, let’s move on to cats. At first, she was a little excited about her feline roommate. Now? She leaves her alone. Why bother the cat when she has a new canine sibling to wrestle with?! Pollyanna does great with other dogs and doesn’t need structured introductions. She is quite playful and incredibly submissive, so she won’t be disrupting any hierarchies. Around children, she is a loveable goof and just wants to give kisses. Now, remember, she is deaf so corrections cannot be yelled at her, effectively. Any children that she is around need to be ok with a slobber-miester!
Needy? Eh… quite up front about wanting attention and loving on her humans, but not overly in the way. As much as she loves affection, she doesn’t whine at all when left alone. Slobbery is a good descriptor for her though! So far, nothing seems to scare the pup and she has just proven to love life on a whole other level! When around new people and other dogs, her energy spikes and she just can’t contain herself. It’s so adorable how she wobbles and wags all around, gaining everyone’s affection with her kisses. But if she is in a quiet space (like her crate, in a secluded room), she is knocked out for hours. Typical Bully behavior. A yard for her to romp in is sufficient exercise. Otherwise, doggy play dates or regular walks will suffice.
Polly is a total klutz which leads to some pretty adorable moments. Being only a year old, she just doesn’t know exactly what to do with her body and always tries to take half of the stairs in one jump…which is never all that successful… Other than being an absolutely loveable pup, Pollyanna is a total sweetheart with a never-ending supply of kisses. If you’re looking for that happy-go-lucky pup who gets spurts of energy but tires out, Polly is your lady! With continued consistency on hand signals, Pollyanna will be trained up and eager to please her new family. She is incredibly food motivated which makes it all the easier, and routines really make her shine bright!
